This Just In: Dozens of Occupy DC Protesters Arrested
Monday, December 5, 2011
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Dozens of Occupy DC protestors were arrested yesterday after they put up a
15-foot-tall wood shelter at their McPherson Square encampment to provide a warm
gathering place as winter weather set in. Although the shelter was intended to
be temporary, the National Park Police ordered it taken down, leading to a
daylong standoff with occupiers. Michael Patterson, 21, of Anchorage, told the
Washington
Post the structure was also meant to symbolize the need to house the
homeless. At presstime late Sunday night there did not seem to be any movement
by either the Park Police or the DC police to clear the rest of the Occupy DC
encampment, but this is a rapidly-changing situation and we will keep you posted
on developments – especially if there’s a need for labor support – via Twitter (follow us @dclabor), on our
website and special edition(s) of Union
City, as necessary. - report/photo by Julia
