AP Workers To Rally For Contract

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

Here’s a hot story that may not make the wire services: editorial and technical employees at The Associated Press will rally for a contract today at 12:30P at the AP’s DC offices at 1100 13th St. NW. The workers are members of News Media Guild, CWA Local 31222, which has “been in very tough contract bargaining for six months now,” for some 1,250 workers across the country, reports News Media Guild mobilizer Linda Johnson. Previous mobilizations pushed AP to withdraw a proposal to hike health insurance premiums as much as 150 percent, says Johnson, but “We’re still far apart on the other economic issues, which include AP’s demand to freeze our pensions and a below-inflation raise.”
