Union City was among the winners at this year’s Front Page Awards, with Managing Editor Chris Garlock’s “Take Back Our Democracy” shot (right) at a March demonstration against banks winning a “Distinguished National News Photography” award. The Front Page Awards honor the “best of the best” in writing and imagery created by workers in Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild-covered units during 2010. Other photography award-winners included Carl Mark Gail and John McDonnell of the Washington Post. “It’s a huge honor for Union City to be in such illustrious company,” Garlock said. “This award inspires us to continue to shoot for excellence every day in our coverage of the local labor movement.”  In addition to Front Page awards -- click here for the complete list -- the Guild awarded its annual Service Awards, including Member of the Year to Connie Knox and Bill Salganik, Steward of the Year to James Crudup and the Herb Block Community Service Award to Elise Bryant. - photo: Garlock with Elise Bryant; photo by Lisa Garlock
