Chanting, “Public workers stand up and fight, the American Dream is our right” and “Don’t shred the safety net,” dozens of area workers rallied outside the Social Security Administration on M Street NW last night to preserve public programs threatened by the House GOP’s proposed budget. “What is happening today is that right wing extremists want to attack Social Security,” said Social Security Administration worker Witold Skweirski. “Republicans have jammed through a budget that would cut $1.7 billion dollars from Social Security, which would be devastating to millions of aging and disabled Americans.” Rally organizers – which included Strengthen Social Security and MoveOn.org – say that the Republican budget would hurt working families, the poor and senior citizens and that “working people all across the nation are standing up together against such vicious attacks on vital public services.” – report/photo by Adam Wright
