A new report reveals that retail giant Walmart shifts the burden for public services by ducking $400 million a year in state and local taxes. Saying this “sucks resources from local communities,” the Living Wages, Healthy Communities Coalition’s Mike Wilson vows that “We’re not going to let them get away with that here.” The next coalition meeting is Tuesday, March 8, 7P at the AFL-CIO. “We’re doing phone banking there starting at 5:30 every Tuesday, so come early and make some calls!” urges Wilson. The Coalition “is always looking for more volunteers to canvass and phone bank,” Wilson adds. Click here to sign up or contact Wilson at organizer@respectdc.org or 202-255-7974. The report, Shifting the Burden for Vital Public Services, is available at no cost on the Good Jobs First website. - photo: members, staff and supporters of UFCW Local 400 distributed pamphlets to downtown Metro commuters in April, 2010 highlighting how the mega-retailer dodges taxes; photo by Chris Garlock
