Marching For Mexican Workers

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

Five years ago, 65 miners died in the Pasta de Conchos mine explosion in Mexico. Today at noon, area labor activists and leaders – including United Mineworkers President Cecil Roberts -- will march on the Mexican Embassy to deliver their demand that the Mexican government end the intimidation and labor rights violations of workers in Mexico. “The Mexican government is right to demand respect for Mexican workers living and working in the United States,” noted AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka, “but it has an equal obligation to protect working families in Mexico and end its on-going assault on their basic rights to safety at work and to organize and participate in unions.” The DC demo is just one of the events being held worldwide this week as part of the Global Action for Workers’ Rights in Mexico international week of action.
