DC Unionists Call For Democracy In Egypt

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

Local labor activists are joining Egyptian American organizations and the AFL-CIO today at 6:30P to demonstrate their support for the people and workers of Egypt as they peacefully call for a transition to genuine democracy. Millions of Egyptian citizens have been demonstrating for an end to authoritarian rule in that country for two weeks, and Egypt’s new independent trade union movement is a prominent voice that "deserves the support of workers around the world," says the Solidarity Center's Shawna Bader-Blau. The demonstration at the White House is part of today’s Day of Action for Democracy in Egypt with trade unions around the world organizing and participating in local rallies and events. Union members are joining with community and human rights groups to continue to press their governments to demand democratic transition in Egypt.  Click here to see messages of support from trade union leaders around the world and here for the AFL-CIO blog’s Global Unions Demand End to Egyptian Violence report. - photo of January DC demo courtesy Institute for Public Accuracy
