“If Walmart comes (to DC) and they don’t raise standards it’s going to affect the community by closing a lot of the Mom and Pop shops, as well as taking a lot of business away from Safeway, where I work,” said Lawan Fletcher (second from right) -- a UFCW Local 400 member who lives and works in Ward 7 -- at Monday’s MLK Peace Walk in the District. “It was great to come together with DC residents,” added fellow Local 400 member Kayla Mock (at right), “and show the parallels between Martin Luther King, Jr.’s stance on workers rights and how DC needs to fight against the corporate giant, Walmart, for the same quality standards because even though DC needs more jobs, they need jobs that will enhance them as a community in the future.” Click here for a complete report on the Walk and more photos on Local 400’s website. - photo by Eric Schlein
