“Nearly all of us have spent time in a sprawling IKEA store, marveling at all the furniture options,” writes Mike Hall on the AFL-CIO’s blog. A struggle by some 350 workers to form a union with the Machinists (IAM) at Danville, VA-based Swedwood, an IKEA furniture plant subsidiary, "highlights what really goes on behind the showroom floors. This week, the workers, the IAM and the global union federation, Builders and Woodworkers International (BWI), launched a campaign to shine a spotlight on what they say are labor and human rights abuses at Swedwood. According to the workers, the issues include dangerous working conditions; forced overtime; discriminatory work practices; high injury rates; discharge of union supporters; and harassment of union organizers.” Click here now to send a message to Ikea CEO Mikael Ohlsson or click here to read the full story.
