Celebrate Decade Of Activism At DC JwJ Cabaret
Tuesday, November 30, 2010(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
DC Jobs With Justice started in 2001 as a small grouping of
labor unions and community members supporting organizing by parking garage
attendants. Over the last decade, DC JwJ has blossomed into a broad-based
coalition of 40-plus groups that cuts across all sectors of the labor movement.
This Friday, DC JwJ will celebrate a decade of activism at a Winter Cabaret,
complete with hand dancing lessons, the Scrooge of the Year announcement -- cast your vote here --
Scroogedriver cocktails, homemade deserts and with music by DJ Stankfoot.
Working in solidarity, through direct action, DC JwJ has helped tens of
thousands of workers organize unions and win fair contracts; pushed through
Inclusionary Zoning, a DC Living Wage and Paid Sick and Safe Days legislation to
ensure good jobs and affordable housing for DC residents; directly organized
low-income contingent workers to defend their rights and get back tens of
thousands of dollars in back-wages and most recently, succeeded in making DC the
first place in the country to reject the “Secure Communities” program, a
dangerous collaboration between local police and immigration authorities.
Cabaret tickets are $10-25 sliding scale. Purchase
tickets online or contact DC JwJ at rcastel@dclaborarchives.org or
