Unemployed Workers Wanted For Congress Lobby Day
Monday, November 29, 2010(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
With two million jobless Americans facing an imminent and
devastating loss of unemployment benefits, the AFL-CIO is seeking unemployed
workers in the metro DC area to help lobby Congress next Wednesday. “Unless
Congress reauthorizes the current program before it expires on November 30th,
jobless benefits will be cut off for about 2 million workers by the end of
December,” says the AFL-CIO. “Cutting off benefits would have a devastating
impact on unemployed workers, their families, and the local retail businesses
and communities that rely on consumer spending during the traditional holiday
shopping season.” This is a good high-profile opportunity on a issue of vital
importance to America's workers: the unemployed workers will attend a briefing
at the AFL-CIO at 10A and then go to Capitol Hill for a press conference and
lobbying visits with Senate and House leadership until 3:30P. Council affiliates
are encouraged to email awright@dclaborarchives.org to
submit names of members who wish to participate. PLUS: click
here now to tell Congress to renew the federal unemployment insurance
programs before they expire on November 30.
