Local hotspot Teaism was “mobbed” Saturday by nearly 100 area supporters of paid sick leave. Teaism was the winner of DC’s First Carrotmob, a community organizing event organized by the Employment Justice Center and Restaurant Opportunities Center-DC to mark the second year anniversary of the District’s Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Act. A Carrotmob is a method of activism that enables consumers to use their buying power to reward socially responsible businesses. The Sick Leave law, which requires employers to provide between 3-7 paid sick/safe days, left out many workers, including tipped restaurant workers. DC Councilmember Tommy Wells (Ward 6) presented Teaism owners Michelle Brown and Linda Neumann with the Golden Carrot Award at the Penn Quarter Teaism as organizational allies, parents, and community members dined in support of the restaurant's environmentally friendly policies, provision of health care, and in-house promotion policies.
