Redskins Reaffiliate With Council
Wednesday, November 17, 2010(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
The newest affiliate of the Metro Council has just 53 local
members, but their names are known across Washington. Names like Donovan McNabb
and Clinton Portis, quarterback and running back for the Washington Redskins,
whose players have re-affiliated with the Metro Washington Council as part of
the National Football League Players Association affiliation with State
Federations and Central Labor Councils across the country this month. “We’re
thrilled to have the Redskins players back in the Council,” said Council
President Jos Williams. “We stood strong with them in both the 1982 and 1987
strikes and will support their current efforts to prevent a lockout by the
owners next year,” said Williams. Though NFL owners are pocketing billions in
profits, like other bosses in the current economic climate, they’re demanding
givebacks and takeaways, threatening not only their players but the jobs of more
than 25,000 concession workers at stadiums across the country, which would cost
more then $140 million in lost revenue for each of the 32 NFL cities. The
Redskins players will be entitled to one voting delegate at the Council; no word
at presstime who that’ll be. Click
