Thursday, November 4, 2010(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Fifteen graduates will take the stage next Monday as the
Building Futures Project pre-apprenticeship training program hosts a graduation
to honor the accomplishments of it's seventh graduating class. Each graduate
will be awarded certificate of completion, which includes OSHA 10 and CPR First
Aid certifications as well as six weeks of course work in blueprint reading,
construction math, and introduction to the building trades. The classes have
also visited construction projects like the St. Elizabeth's West Campus
Redevelopment Project and the Dulles Metro Rail Extension to help them be
competitive applicants for ongoing local work. "Building Futures continues to
create outstanding opportunities for it's graduates through high quality pre-
apprenticeship training," says Yvette De La Cruz, a training consultant on the
project. Thus far, 121 Building Futures participants have obtained employment as
a result of the training. – Jenna Gold, Job Development
