(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

Longtime D.C. sanitation worker Larry Hutchins (r), a member of AFSCME Local 2091, was killed on the job October 13, when a man fired shots outside a Department of Public Works facility as trash collectors were preparing to start their rounds. Hutchins, 51, of Suitland, was standing with other employees in the trash-truck lot of the facility, at 1241 W St. NE, when the assailant walked into the lot about 6:15 a.m. and fired almost two dozen shots, police said. A second sanitation worker, a man in his mid-50s, was also wounded. Hutchins was a 24-year "sanitation technician," who rode on the back of trash trucks with a second worker, while a third worker drove. “Our hearts, prayers and solidarity go out to Larry’s family, friends and fellow workers,” said Metro Council President Jos Williams. “We are united in our shared grief and outrage at this needless and tragic loss.” - based on By Paul Duggan’s report in The Washington Post; photo courtesy myfoxdc.com
