Over 100 Northern Virginia construction workers are collecting $36,944 they’re owed by contractors who didn’t pay prevailing wages. The underpayments by a dozen contractors on the Dulles Metrorail Extension Project were exposed by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Inspector General (IG) after an investigation requested by Congressman Gerald E. Connolly (D, VA 11). Underpayments of $1,045 to 17 employees were also discovered at projects on Fort Belvoir, and an investigation into 16 other subcontractors – with $161,358 in potential restitution for 214 workers -- is ongoing, IG Calvin Scovel told Connolly, “so if you run across any other problems with apparent underpayment let me know and we'll get the OIG back out there.” - photo: construction workers are seen assembling concrete segments on the Dulles Metrorail Extension Project; photo courtesy The Washington Post
