Labor Turns Out

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

Whether clad in their union colors or labor-endorsed candidate t-shirts, union activists stood up for area workers yesterday as local voters went to the polls. Working polls across the region from the pre-dawn darkness before polls opened to the evening hours when the last votes were cast, the activists put the finishing touches on a local labor political effort that included candidate screenings and endorsements, lit drops, knock-and-talks, straw polls, phonebanks and mailings to turn out the vote for candidates who pledged support for the concerns of the area’s working men and women. - PHOTO COLLAGE: Labor At The Polls: Top right: Morgan Webb SEIU 32BJ in Northeast DC; Bottom right: Metro Council DC Political Coordinator Alya Solomon brings Iron 5’s Tyrone Thomas lunch in Northeast DC; Bottom center: Mayoral Candidate Vince Gray (center) with Metro Council President Jos Williams (r) and Iron 5 Business Manager Kendall Martin (l); Bottom center left: Iron 5 members place Mendelson signs in DC; Bottom left: Vanessa Dixon, Doctors Council, in Northeast DC ; Left center: Vicki Thomas, AFT, in Northwest DC; Top left: Jen Shykula UNITE HERE 25 (center) and Avram Fechter AFSCME (right) with At-Large candidate Phil Mendelson in Northwest DC; Top center: Carlos Mellott, UFCW 1994, in Montgomery County; photos by Chris Garlock, except Vince Gray by Adam Wright
