Daycon Strikers Win NLRB Ruling

The striking workers at Daycon have won yet another ruling by the National Labor Relations Board, reports Teamsters Local 639, which represents the workers. The ruling that the 5-month-old strike is an Unfair Labor Practices strike "means that Daycon is liable for back wages since the strikers offered to return to work in early July," said Local 639 Business Agent Doug Webber. The NLRB has consistently ruled that Daycon’s actions have been illegal, including declaring impasse to force the strike, subcontracting bargaining unit work and refusing to reinstate its workers. Noting that “winning legal victories does not return our members back to gainful employment or put food on their families’ tables.” Local 639 says it’s “ready and willing to engage in bargaining to resolve the outstanding issues” but “we cannot allow the Company to reap the benefits of its illegal activities” and asks supporters to “contact Daycon and tell it to rescind its unlawful actions, reinstate its workers and get back to the table.” - photo: striking Daycon workers are seen walking the picket line in Upper Marlboro in May; photo by Adam Wright
