More than 850 local labor activists and supporters turned out Saturday night for the 28th annual Evening with Labor, local labor’s largest social event of the year. UFCW Local 400 President Jimmy Lowthers won the JC Turner Award for Outstanding Trade Unionist of the Year, thanks to his leadership of “a model labor council affiliate” that’s consistently led the way on organizing, mobilizing and support for community services. Other award winners included SEIU Local 500, MCCSSE (Organizing), UNITE HERE Local 25 (Golden Picket), Jamell Thrower, IBEW 26 and Shaihi Mwalimu, AFSCME 3976 (COPE) and Marilyn Wiley & Yvette Martin-Gross, on behalf of AFGE District 14 volunteers (Community Services Thomas M. Bradley Award) and Reverend Morris L. Shearin, Pastor of Israel Baptist Church (Outstanding Citizen), who delivered the evening’s invocation. Photos from Evening With Labor are available online now and will be available for the next 3 weeks. Prints (up to 8x10) or digital files are available for $30 each (including delivery).
