Labor and community allies will celebrate the 75th birthday of Social Security this Saturday at the Greenbelt Community Center in Maryland. “Drop by to show your support for protecting Social Security and Medicare from any benefit cuts or raising of the retirement age,” say event organizers, which include National Nurses United/California Nurses Association, the Metropolitan Washington Council AFL-CIO, and the Labor Campaign for Single Payer Healthcare. Invited guests include Senator Benjamin Cardin, Senator Barbara Mikulski, Governor Martin O’Malley, Rep. Steny Hoyer, Rep. Elijah Cummings, Rep. Donna Edwards and Rep. Chris Van Hollen. Social Security was signed into law by Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935, and has become the largest government social insurance program in the world.
