Cards from nearly 5,000 Montgomery County residents demanding “Save Our Services” were presented to County Council President Nancy Floreen and Councilmember Valerie Ervin yesterday. “I work overnight in the schools,” said Montgomery County public schools maintenance employee Hasty Williams. The proposed cuts to Ride-On "will make it so I can’t get to work.” The cards, urging the Council to recognize the full impact of the deep cuts in services in the proposed budget, were collected at locations across the county in less than a week by members of UFCW Local 1994. “We are listening,” promised Council President Floreen. Councilmember Ervin reassured the delegation of Montgomery County public employees and consumers of County services that the Council has not finished its work. “We are doing all we can to make sure these cuts are fair and equitable across the board,” she said. “We are trying to sort this out, to balance our residents’ needs.”- report/photo by Lisa Gebbia
