DC JwJ's "Talkin Justice": A People's Victory
Monday, October 19, 2009(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
The campaign to keep the DC's daycare centers open continues!
Thanks to emails from hundreds of activists, the DC City Council amended the
Budget Support Act to restore funding to the daycare program, and are currently
exploring the possibility of initiating a lawsuit against the Executive for
defying the law. And last week they refused to confirm DPR Interim Director
Ximena Hartsock, who'd been appointed Interim Department of Parks &
Recreation Director by Mayor Fenty. Hartsock has defied City Council legislation
and closed the doors of 13 childcare centers, destroying the city's
high-quality, badly-needed child care services, putting hundreds of kids on the
street and union workers out of their jobs. "I have no idea how I will be able
to find childcare for my son," says mother Jane Andrews. Help protect these
victories by clicking
