AFSCME 2027 member Tony
Holmes received a 2005 Governor’s Crime Prevention Award. Holmes, who works at
the Corporation for National and Community Service, serves as President of the
Maryland National Capital Park Police Volunteer Association (PPVA). The Maryland award is given to community
groups, organizations, and individual citizens in Maryland who have made
outstanding contributions to the furtherance of crime prevention in their
communities. Under Holmes’ leadership, the PPVA has expanded its programs and
developed new projects to promote safety and crime prevention, including
expanding the “Cell Phone Donation Program” to seven collection points with
1200 phones, participating in the Adopt-A-Trail program, and conducting weekly
Bicycle Patrols to promote safety in the parks. Holmes also spearheaded an
education and outreach campaign with articles in the Montgomery County Gazette,
the creation of the PPVA web page, www.ppva.net, and the development of a PPVA
brochure. These outreach and
education activities of the PPVA have led to a thriving community crime
prevention program with a focus on child safety.
