(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

Long-time DC educator, labor leader and community activist Dr. Shirley O. Brown passed away June 7 “at Washington Hospital Center of injuries suffered that day in an automobile accident,” reported Yvonne Shinhoster Lamb in Tuesday’s Washington Post. Dr. Brown – a DC native and Hyattville, MD resident at the time of his death – began working in the DC school system in the 1950s, serving “as a counselor, teacher and vice principal at several schools” and a leader with the Council of School Officers Local 4 for 14 years. He retired from the DC school system in 1974, after six years as principal of Roosevelt High School, but remained an active member of multiple community organizations, including AARP, the Boys Club of Greater Washington, the Kiwanis Club, the Educators Club of Greater Washington and others. Brown also pursued a doctorate in education at UCLA after retiring. Click here to read the full Post obituary.
