(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Leaders of the Firestone Agricultural Workers Union of Liberia (FAWUL) will wrap up their DC trip tonight at 6:30P with a public forum on the fight for economic justice and workers’ rights in Liberia. Speakers at tonight’s event will include FAWUL President Austin S. Natee, FAWUL Secretary General Edwin B. Cisco, David D. Sackoh, Secretary General of the Forestry, Logging and Industrial Workers' Union of Liberia, and Oretha D. Garway, Vice President of the Forestry, Logging and Industrial Workers Union of Liberia. The workers received the AFL-CIO’s George Meany – Lane Kirkland Human Rights Award last night for their fight to win the first-ever independent, rank-and-file run union at the Liberian Firestone rubber plantation (Labor Updates 1/10/08 UC). The workers’ visit coincides with a Solidarity Center photo exhibit and the launch of a new AFL-CIO and United Steelworkers of America video on the workers’ struggle and victory. The photo exhibit runs through Friday in the AFL-CIO lobby. Click here to watch the video.
