In Memoriam: Tom Powers
Thursday, June 19, 2008
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Long-time labor lawyer and activist Tom Powers passed away from cancer at
his home in Rockville last week, reported Yvonne Shinhoster Lamb in Wednesday's
Washington Post. He was 74. Powers began his involvement with the labor movement after
moving to DC to pursue a law degree at George Washington University in the
1960s. For nearly four decades, Powers provided counsel to a variety of Metro DC
workers, including broadcasters, actors, bricklayers, steelworkers and school
administrators in Prince George's County "during a career highlighted by his
passion for the labor movement," Lamb reported. "Tom was a near and dear member
of our labor family," said Metro Council President Jos Williams. "Our thoughts
and solidarity go out to his entire family, including Tom's wife, Pat O'Donnell
of AFTRA/SAG." A funeral service will be held in the Solidarity Hall of the
National Labor College (10000 New Hampshire Ave Silver Spring, MD) Friday at
11:30A. Contributions in his memory can be made to the National Labor College
(indicate on the check that the contribution is for the Tom Powers Memorial). Click
