3 Ways to Be Smithfield-Free

Metro DC labor and community activists won't be grilling Smithfield meats
this summer as the campaign heats up to get the giant pork processor to halt its
abuses of workers at their hog processing plant in Tar Heel, North Carolina. An
online worker solidarity
campaign was launched last Friday to encourage consumers to choose alternatives to Smithfield products.
"Whether it's making a personal pledge not to patronize Smithfield, advertising
your support of Smithfield workers with a yard sign, or handing our flyers at
your local Metro, every action makes a difference in the fight for worker
justice at Smithfield," says Mackenzie Baris of DC Jobs with Justice. Next up in the campaign
is a kick-off rally this Thursday at 11:30A with a host of local political,
community, religious and labor allies. Click
