Ward 7 Residents to Speak Up for Free Speech Tonight
Thursday, May 29, 2008
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
DC Ward 7 residents – concerned about the potential impact the noise bill
will have on free speech rights in the District – will voice their concerns
about the bill to DC Councilmember Yvette Alexander at her “State of the
Ward” meeting tonight at 6P. Alexander and six other Councilmembers gave
initial approval to the noise bill – which would severely limit free speech
rights in DC – in early May (DC
Council Votes to Limit Free Speech 5/7/08 UC). She had voiced her support
for a labor-supported compromise amendment but changed her vote at the last
minute. The City Council will hold a second vote on the bill on June 3. “If
you live in Ward 7, come to the meeting and let her know that you want to
protect free speech,” says the Speak and Be Heard Coalition, which is
organizing efforts to defeat the legislation at the June 3 vote. Watch UNION
CITY and the website for upcoming actions leading up to the June 3 vote.
