Northern Virginia union members were recognized for their volunteer achievements in 2007 at Friday's Northern Virginia Central Labor Council (NoVA CLC) Volunteer Recognition Dinner. "We had about 300 people in attendance, including local elected officials and congressional candidates as well as many union members and their families," NoVA Central Labor Council President Dan Duncan tells UNION CITY! United Mine Workers of America President Cecil Roberts and his own "Amen Chorus" - featuring Duncan, Metro Council President Jos Williams, Utility Workers of American Secretary-Treasurer Gary Ruffner, Virginia State AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Doris Crouse-May, and Virginia State AFL-CIO President Jim Leaman - fired up the crowd during Roberts' Spirit of the Working Man Address. Attendess also participated in a silent auction that included a signed "UFCW for Obama" poster and a starter collection of labor-related presidential campaign pins, including a 1936 FDR pin. The event and auction helped raise funds for NoVA CLC activities and the NoVA Committee on Political Education.
