Workers at Carlyle/Manor Care of Dulaney Nursing Home in Towson, Maryland
will rally outside the facility today against management's refusal to the
negotiate a fair contract. "After months of negotiations, management refuses to
budge on key issues including affordable health care, decent pension benefits
and contributing to a training and upgrading fund for workers," reports 1199SEIU
United Healthcare Workers East, which represents workers at the facility. The
Carlyle Group - a DC private equity buyout firm - recently purchased Manor Care.
The purchase has been the target of protests (Nursing
Home Workers Confront Buyout Giant 2/14/08 UC) and SEIU has raised concerns
about its effects on patient care and staffing and Carlyle's creation of shell
companies that would prevent its from being subject to medical facility
regulations and lawsuits.
