Friday, March 21, 2008
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
This year's Outstanding Trade Unionist is Doris Reed of the
Association of Supervisory and Administrative School Personnel (ASASP). Reed -
who will receive the JC Turner Outstanding Trade Unionist Award at Saturday
night's Evening with Labor -- has been "an active member of the Metro Council
Executive Board, turning out the union members for endorsed-candidate campaigns,
participating actively in endorsement interviews, supporting the Council's
political initiatives, lobbying for labor in Prince George's County, and working
in solidarity with the other school unions," says Metro Council President Jos
Williams. "She's also been a strong supporter of the Community Services Agency
efforts and has been instrumental in promoting the return of Career and
Technical Education with the Prince George's County School Superintendent's
Office." IRON WORKERS LOCAL 5 and the BRICKLAYERS AND ALLIED
CRAFTWORKERS are this year's Thomas M. Bradley Community Services
Award-winners. "These organizations have done it all to support
the CSA," says Community Services Agency (CSA) Executive Director Kathleen
McKirchy. Both unions have been major supporters of the Community Services
Agency's (CSA) bowling and golf tournaments, the first-ever Labor at the Nats
night, and the Annual Holiday Basket project, raising thousands of dollars to
support the CSA's efforts. Local 5 has also provided hands-on pre-apprenticeship
training at CSA's request for women going through the Washington Area Women in
the Trades program and the Bricklayers helped CSA collect personal care and baby
items for hurricanes Katrina and Rita. For tickets for Evening With Labor, email
