Women to Explore Globalization in Guatemala

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Women are invited to attend this year’s STITCH Delegation to Guatemala, scheduled for June 7-15. The delegation combines Spanish instruction with an in-depth look at the effects of globalization and immigration on women workers and unionists. Participants will spend mornings learning Spanish with one-on-one instruction at a school in the colonial town of Antigua, Guatemala and in the afternoons, meet with women union leaders and globalization activists who are fighting for better conditions in the booming textile industry. The delegation will also travel to the banana plantations in Eastern Guatemala to hear from workers affected by free trade policies and explore the roles North Americans play as consumers and activists. Open to women only; applications are due by April 14. For more information or an application, contact STITCH, stitch@stitchonline.org; 202-265-3790.
