MD Child Care Workers Pay Still Delayed

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

Maryland child care workers - who recently unionized over the issue – say the state is still unreliable and often late in paying them (Childcare Providers Rally for Kids Tuesday 4/30/07 UC), according to a report Saturday on The Examiner website. "Payment problems last year helped the Service Employees International Union 500 galvanize some child care workers to vote to form a union after some workers went months without pay,"  reported Kathleen Miller. Wheaton child care provider Nuri Funes said the state has improved a little bit since last year, but the system needs more work. She is getting paid, "one, two or five days late" now, she told The Examiner. "You really cannot make your budget plans like this, you're always opening your mailbox and hoping something will be there," Funes said. Click here to read Miller's full report.
