Business Still Trying to Kill Paid Sick Leave Bill

Friday, February 1, 2008

DC workers' long wait for paid sick days may not be over. The Paid Sick Leave bill - which was to get a first vote in City Council on Tuesday - may be tabled because of intense behind-the-scenes opposition from the business community. Disregarding months of negotiations that significantly revised the original bill to accommodate their demands, the Chamber of Commerce last week circulated an email saying they "oppose this bill and want this bill defeated." Responded Metro Council President Jos Williams, "Opponents of the bill are interested in one thing: killing paid sick leave for long-suffering DC workers."  The legislation - nearly two years in the making – would guarantee a minimum number of paid sick and safe days for all DC workers. Supporters of the bill will hold a press conference Monday at noon to demand that the Council pass the measure.
