Council Delegate Meeting Highlights

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Invitations for the 2008 Evening With Labor have gone out; this year’s ’08 award-winners include Doris Reed, ASASP (JC Turner Award for Outstanding Trade Unionist), 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and SEIU Local 500 (Organizing Awards), James Allen Jr., Retired ATU Local 689 (COPE Award), and Ironworkers Local 5 and International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (Community Services Award)…Meetings of political, organizing and communication directors for Council affiliates will resume February 21 (email Chris Garlock, cgarlock@dclaborarchives.org for details)…Time for the annual affiliate contributions to CSA’s Emergency Assistance Fund (for more info, contact email Kathleen McKirchy, kmckirch@dclaborarchives.org)... The Council is taking a neutral position on filling the MD State Senate seat vacancy created by the death of Gwendolyn Britt (contact Rick Powell, rpowell@dclaborarchives.org for more info)…Six unions – Teamsters 639, IBEW 26, IATSE 22, SEIU 32BJ, UFCW 400 & UNITE HERE 25 – stand to gain as many as 1,200 new members through card-check agreements at the Gaylord National Harbor project…Teamsters 639 recently won several new contract agreements…Sonny Reed was re-elected President of SEIU 400…Brian Benson, the new President of IATSE 22, was sworn in as new Council delegate…Dan Dyer and Linda Bridges were re-elected as OPEIU Local 2 President and 1st Vice President respectively.
