Tales of Solidarity

Thursday, January 24, 2008

"It comes as a shock to most people that in North Carolina public sectors workers are prohibited from engaging in collective bargaining," because of a state law that declares "such contracts illegal," says Robin Alexander on the Labor is Not a Commodity blog. Alexander is the Director of International Labor Affairs for the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) But through international solidarity work with unions in Japan, Quebec, and worldwide labor federations, the UE presented and won a case before the International Labor Organization that could finally restore public sector workers rights. Throughout this week, the Labor is Not a Commodity blog is featuring this and other stories as part of the World Social Forum Global Week of Action. "We will be sharing these stories to show how people around the world have come together to support workers' rights," says Tim Newman of the International Labor Right Forum.  Keep checking throughout the week for inspiring updates.
