Activists Protest Carlyle "Grinch" at Manor Care

Thursday, December 20, 2007

Healthcare advocates donned a Santa suit and delivered rubber gloves, diapers, and wipes to Manor Care Health Services in Wheaton on Wednesday to express their concern that the CEO windfalls from the Carlyle buyout could come at the cost of service for residents. With Carlyle still trying to close the deal to buy Manor Care nursing homes, caregivers and family members dubbed Carlyle Group Co-Founder David Rubenstein "the Grinch who's stealing Christmas for residents" and demanded that Rubenstein put care first. Activists are calling on Carlyle to fix the problems at Manor Care nursing homes across the nation, including problems with low staffing and violations of patient care standards. A cash shortage does not appear to be the problem: Rubenstein spent $21.3 million to buy a copy of the Magna Carta Tuesday night.
