AFSCME Shop Stewards Recognized

Friday, December 21, 2007

Over 70 local AFSCME shop stewards got their time in the spotlight last month at AFSCME Council 20’s first annual "Salute to Local Union Shop Stewards." Being a shop steward is "often a thankless, exhausting job," AFSCME Council 20 President Geo T. Johnson - a former shop steward at AFSCME Local 2091 - told the awardees. But "without you, this union is nothing. You are the union in the eyes of your co-workers. That's why we are honored to salute each one of you." A host of labor leaders, including Metro Council President Jos Williams, AFSCME International Secretary-Treasurer Bill Lucy, and AFSCME Council 67 President and International Vice President Glennard Middleton and DC Councilmembers Marion Barry, Carol Schwartz and Harry Thomas Jr. attended the event.
