Union Parents Protest School Closing

Friday, December 14, 2007

Union activist parents of children at Stevens Elementary School in downtown DC will march on Monday to protest the proposed closing of the school. The Mayor’s school reform proposals would “close Stevens and force our children into classes with junior high school children,” says SEIU 32BJ Organizer Bernard Hackett. Under the Mayor’s plan, Stevens Elementary School would be closed and students from the school would be enrolled in Francis Junior High School. “This will take away our right to choose where our kids are educated and puts our children, who are in their early developmental years, in a school they may not be ready for.” The march – which follows an ANC meeting last night where parents addressed the issue – will start at 5:30P at Stevens Elementary School (21st between K and L) and ends at Francis Junior High School. For more info, contact Bernard Hackett, bernardhcktt@yahoo.com. Metro Council President Jos Williams will discuss the school reform issue on WPFW 89.3 FM at 9:45A and on WTOP 103.5 FM at 10A today.
