Eat, Drink & Save a Life

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

A special holiday edition of Drink with Labor on December 12 will benefit the Clément Solidarity Fund. Clément, a member of the Teamsters – and General Secretary of his union at the National Printing House for 13 years before he fled Côte d'Ivoire in 2005 -- is fighting to gain political asylum in the United States. An officer of the Rally of Republicans (RDR), the country's largest opposition party, Clément's life is in danger if he returns to his country. The RDR has consistently stood for freedom of speech and association, religious and ethnic tolerance, and has fought for democratic elections in the face of violent repression.  Ivorian security forces detained and tortured Clément three times between 2000 and 2004 for his political activity. There are now outstanding warrants for his arrest in Côte d'Ivoire and Clement’s supporters are helping raise legal fees to keep him safe in the United States.
