Macy's & Wal-Mart Linked by Sweatshops

Friday, November 16, 2007

What do high-end Macy's and low-cost Wal-Mart have in common? They both sell sweatshop goods and they're both being targeted in demonstrations this Saturday, including one at the downtown DC Macy's. “Many big box chain stores look the other way when their products are produced under sweatshop conditions,” says Trina Tocco of the International Labor Rights Forum. The DC action is one of dozens of events scheduled at a variety of stores, including Wal-Mart and the Gap, in the US and 16 other countries as part of the International Day of Action Against Big Box Stores. “This day of action is to remind people to think about the working and environmental conditions many products are made under and spend their money at businesses that value human beings, not just profits.”
