Paula Deen Heartless?

Tuesday, November 6, 2007

Country cookin' needs heart. More than 50 activists welcomed celebrity chef Paula Deen to the Washington Convention Center Saturday with a rally supporting Smithfield workers who have been harassed and intimidated for trying to organize a union. Wearing chef's hats, holding heart-shaped signs and singing Paula Deen-themed songs, the Smithfield activists asked Deen to “have a heart” and keep the promise she made on the “Larry King Live” show to meet with Smithfield workers. A few Smithfield worker supporters snuck into Deen's cooking demonstration to let her know that her partnership with unionbuster Smithfield Foods is not acceptable, but were quickly escorted out by police. The protesters pledged to keep showing up a Deen's public events throughout the country until she finds her “moral compass” and listens to what Smithfield workers have to say. -Report by Marc Goumbri
