Learning English & Math

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

More than 50 area workers have participated in the Community Services Agency's (CSA) "Speaking of Math" program, designed for workers learning English and focusing on construction math. Funded by a generous grant from the Community Foundation, CSA has been running a multi-focused program which aims to assist workers with limited English proficiency (LEP) succeed in the building and construction trades. To expand the program more broadly, CSA project staff developed a week-long training for apprenticeship instructors to help them include LEP workers more fully in apprenticeship as well as how to meet the instructional challenges presented by classes with English and non-English speakers so all can learn effectively.  The National Labor College approved the class and it was run October 15-19 at the NLC campus. Special thanks to project consultants Amber Gallup and Laura Chenven (not pictured) who developed and taught this class.
