Winston Salem or Bust

Monday, October 22, 2007

Free seats are available on the AFL-CIO’s bus to the October 28 rally in Winston Salem supporting tobacco harvesters. The Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC), has begun a campaign to organize more than 25,000 tobacco harvesters in North Carolina. Reynolds American CEO Susan Ivey has refused to meet with FLOC President Baldemar Velasquez to discuss the plight of the tobacco harvesters, their need for dignity, respect and safe working conditions and the recognition of their union. R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company is the second largest tobacco company in the United States with a long history of opposition to the rights of its workers to organize into unions.
