A Letter From Ken Loach

Monday, October 15, 2007

"I still have the rather unfashionable view that the most progressive force in society is the organised working class," said director Ken Loach. DC Labor FilmFest Co-Chair Jos Williams read the letter from Loach - who was unable to attend due to illness -- at Thursday night's DC Labor FilmFest Opening Night screening of his new film, "It's A Free World." "As you know," Loach continued, "the British Labour party -- as opposed to the labour movement -- is now fully committed to the neo-con programme.  Everything is to be privatised, trades unions are held in contempt and, in every sphere, corporate interests prevail, even to the extent of supporting your Government in illegal wars, breaking the United Nations constitution and the Geneva Convention and generally becoming the terrorists and torturers of the modern world. Clearly," said Loach, "we must make links across national boundaries and plan and act on an international scale. Thank you for showing our films and good luck in all your projects."
