AU Bus Drivers Win Union

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

Shuttle bus drivers at American University (AU) have won recognition at AU, report Teamsters Local 922, which will represent the workers. AU agreed to recognize the union after the NLRB rejected the school’s appeal of the representation election won by the local, and “the school and its top officials [were] hammered by a creative campaign by students, staff, alumni and others,” reports the Teamsters’ Roger Newell. AU’s Student Senate had passed a resolution supporting the rights of campus workers to form a union, and a similar measure was slated to be introduced in the Faculty Senate as well as at the school’s board of trustees, “demonstrating the effectiveness of combining coordinated student outreach, workers solidarity and media outreach,” said Local 922’s Secretary-Treasurer Aaron Sawyer, who headed up the campaign.
