Council Delegates OK Teamster, CWA Campaigns

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

The Fall labor season kicked off with a flurry of reports and actions at Monday night's Delegate's Meeting. Tommy Ratliff of Teamsters Local 639 reported on his local's campaign against union-busting by Waste Management (WM), and the delegates approved supporting this campaign by asking area unions and their supporters to switch their trash-hauling contracts away from WM. CWA 2336 President Jim Pappas outlined the new Connect DC campaign to bring fiber optic internet to District residents and ensure continued maintenance of the existing copper wire service. Delegates also approved a resolution submitted by CWA "Supporting Unionized Companies by Urging City and State Governments to Switch Cellular Service to Responsible Providers" which urges area wireless customers to switch service to unionized AT&T Mobility. Also reported on were a number of local legislative priorities for labor previously reported in UNION CITY, as well as updates from CSA, the DC Labor FilmFest, Council affiliates and allies. Look for further reports in upcoming editions of UNION CITY, as well as draft meeting minutes posted online.
