DC Says No to Loansharks
Monday, September 17, 2007
"Lenders have finally got religion, but I think the church
doors are closed," declared Metro Council President Jos Williams after the
community Town Meetings last week on curtailing payday lender rates. At the Town
Meetings, hosted by the Washington Informer and Washington Afro-American,
community attendees strongly rejected the bid by payday lenders to "reform" the
practice that permits such lenders to charge as much as 500% interest. The DC
City Council votes tomorrow on the bill.
