Customers Hang Up on Verizon Union-Busting

Monday, August 20, 2007

Nearly a hundred wireless customers posed with union cell phone mascots Cingy and Flippy at lunchtime on Friday, pledging to "hang up" on Verizon Wireless for their union-busting practices. Chinatown pedestrians -- many of them Verizon customers -- initially wanted to know "why they should hang up on Verizon but were receptive to the information we gave them," said DC Jobs with Justice (DC JwJ) intern Sarah Heydemann. DC JwJ and CWA Local 2336 organized the event to raise awareness about the ongoing union campaign by workers at Verizon Wireless, which has fired and harassed workers fighting for better pay, benefits and union recognition.
