Labor Night With Nats a Homerun
Monday, July 23, 2007
Thousands of union members filled the upper levels of RFK
Stadium Friday, on a perfect summer night, for the First Annual Labor Night with
the Nats. With over 5,700 tickets sold, the first annual event -- sponsored by
the Metro Council and the Northern Virginia Central Labor Council -- received
the Spirit Award for the largest Nationals group ticket sales ever. 16-year old
Hank Waugh threw out the first pitch for his father, third generation ironworker
and Iron Workers Local 5 member Kenny Waugh, who recently had knee surgery and
was unable to attend the event. "I'm excited that my son got the chance to throw
out the first pitch. He's a big baseball fan and our family attends at least six
Nationals games a year," says Kenny Waugh. The event raised over $5,000 for the
Community Services Agency and some labor attendees continued the spirit of
giving by donating toys to the Nationals Toys for Tots program held outside the
stadium. "Even though the Nationals could not pull off a comeback, this was a
great event," said Metro Council President Jos Williams. "Nothing's more
American than baseball, labor solidarity and the spirit of giving to those in
need," Williams added. American Postral Workers
